Summer Design Institute a Success!

Making final design changesMaking final design changes2
Charlottesville City Schools and the Charlottesville Community Design Center joined efforts to offer a one week Summer Design Institute for 10th graders interested in learning more about urban design and specifically about the Westhaven Public Housing neighborhood.

This fall Charlottesville High School is sponsoring an elective course on urban design and three students got a jump start on the class by attending the one week summer session.  Volunteers from CCDC, including Noah Bolton and Mandy Burbage, joined with CHS teacher Kim Thompson to help guide rising sophomores Marissa Harris, Taejuan Hill, and Que’Shawn Younger in the world of urban design and planning.

All who saw the final presentations of their redesigns of Westhaven were very impressed.  Each student now has the start of their own portfolio.  Nice work!

Their designs and ideas will be taken into consideration as the Housing Authority finalizes its master plan and embarks on actual designs for redevelopment.  Thank you Marissa, Taejuan, and Que’Shawn.

August Master Planning Updates:

The consultant team from Wallace, Roberts & Todd (WRT) will be back in town for another round of meetings on Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th.  The schedule for the meeting times and locations is listed below.

We encourage anyone who is interested in affordable housing issues to join us and the consultants at one of these meetings to discuss different design scenarios for our sites.

These scenarios will look at: changing density, increasing access to transportation, parking & recreation space, and incorporating a mix of incomes and uses on-site.

We will also be talking about: enhancing public safety and accessibility, incorporating energy-efficient design methods, expanding the supply of affordable housing for owners and renters, and providing access to commercial spaces.

Snacks, drinks & childcare will be provided at each meeting.
