Summer Design Institute a Success!

Making final design changesMaking final design changes2
Charlottesville City Schools and the Charlottesville Community Design Center joined efforts to offer a one week Summer Design Institute for 10th graders interested in learning more about urban design and specifically about the Westhaven Public Housing neighborhood.

This fall Charlottesville High School is sponsoring an elective course on urban design and three students got a jump start on the class by attending the one week summer session.  Volunteers from CCDC, including Noah Bolton and Mandy Burbage, joined with CHS teacher Kim Thompson to help guide rising sophomores Marissa Harris, Taejuan Hill, and Que’Shawn Younger in the world of urban design and planning.

All who saw the final presentations of their redesigns of Westhaven were very impressed.  Each student now has the start of their own portfolio.  Nice work!

Their designs and ideas will be taken into consideration as the Housing Authority finalizes its master plan and embarks on actual designs for redevelopment.  Thank you Marissa, Taejuan, and Que’Shawn.
